THE HYPOCRISY OF PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT

The pro-life movement is an association in the United States of America that denies women the right to abort and supports its legal prohibition (White). The primary objective of the movement is to promote and defend the value of life from conception until natural death. Moreover, the movement aims at assisting, supporting and promoting the welfare and life of mothers while they are pregnant.

Although pro-lifers have good intentions, they are hypocrites. To start with, no sane person would want to abort just because they have the right to do so (White). Also, no one would choose abortion just to get an easy way out of irresponsible sexual behavior or mistake. Furthermore, a person would not want to abort only because they have changed their minds about wanting to have children (White). With that said, pro-lifers do not have the right to prevent people from responsible abortion, use and access to contraceptives and birth control pills. Nevertheless, they should not deny people the chance to fund organizations that enhance responsible parenthood through educational efforts like education on abstinence.

Pro-lifers claim that they can do anything for the unborn but in reality; they are unwilling to support these children once they are born financially. (Lesley). Pro-life evangelicals are extremists who want to evade taxes that are required to help the poor, orphans and single mothers. The taxes are also needed to provide daycare, free school lunches, and neonatal care. The pro-lifers are mainly concerned with the fetus during the incubation period. Afterward, they do not show any concern.

The pro-lifers disagree with the corporate healthcare and government plans to provide or fund contraception which helps in preventing unwanted pregnancies that lead to abortions. It is against the pro-lifers’ religious beliefs to have sex before marriage (Lesley). Procreation is the only purpose for sex (White). Unfortunately, most young adults, mature women, and teenagers are not wired for those firm religious beliefs. Therefore, abstinence as the only “contraception” is irresponsible and a very risky solution.

Furthermore, young adults see the hypocritical behavior of their evangelical pro-life elders which pushes them even further from these beliefs. Some Catholic priests abuse children sexually, and married parishioners have sex with evangelical ministers. For evangelical abstinence, these are not the right examples of role modeling.

Pro-lifers kill doctors alongside threatening pregnant women and medical professionals. Pro-life does not entail these kinds of characteristics. The pro-lifers claim that they can do anything to save the life of a fetus. However, when it grows up to be a nurse, Planned Parenthood provider or abortion doctor, it is at risk of being killed by the pro-lifers.

While the pro-life movement has been hypocritical, it has not failed entirely in its mission. Many people are being drawn into the movement (Lesley). Through its partnership with pregnancy centers, the pro-life movement provides resources and tools that promote better services during childbirth. The pro-life’s Stork bus enables pregnant women to easily reach professionals (White). The consulting packages provided by the pro-lifers are used in pregnancy centers. People who use them understand how to make better utilization of resources and staff. From this, it is evident that the pro-lifers live up to their responsibility to help women.

Even though there is some positive contribution to the pro-life movement, it still receives a lot of backlash due to its hypocrisy.
